Less than one month ago i made the purchase of the Xcarve 1000, and now I see this $500.00 upgrade come out.
Do I need to worry about all of these same parts on my new xcarve? Is this the upgrade that needs to done for the machine I purchased to be dependable. Can I expect some sort of free upgrade parts to be delivered or a part of my payment to be returned? I have spent quite a number of hours learning and I love this machine. I am very thankful to have the opportunity to be able to create like this.
Asked by Robert Haughn on Jun 3, 2021
This is an optional upgrade to the machine to give people more options. You don’t need to buy it unless you want the additional features listed in the product details. To answer your other question think of it like a car you can buy the base model and drive away, but if you want those fancy wheels your going to pay a little more.
Answered by Ryan Solo on Jun 3, 2021
Fat chance of them ever giving you any refund, you are like the rest of the xcarve suckers, you may get a replamwnt part if something breaks or malfunctions in the first few months but getting a refund? ha!

I’ve owned the X-Carve for four years and its been dependable and a profit maker. Yes, I did have some not flat waste board problems but a leveling bit fix this. You can upgrade the motors before the Z-Axis upgrade and still see improvements to your machine. We currently estimate it would take 90 minutes to upgrade just the motors vs 2 and a half hours for the entire kit.
Product Roadmap
Does Inventables’ product roadmap include future upgrades to the X/Y comparable to the Z in this upgrade? And if so, will this upgrade kit be an incremental step towards that, or would there be wasted parts?
Asked by Smock Home on Jun 5, 2021

New Z Axis - Max weight
What’s the max weight of a spindle that this upgrade could support? Thinking of replacing the Dewalt with a spindle…
Asked by Phil Lenz on Jun 5, 2021
Hi Phil. Unfortunately, we have not tested the max weight for the z-axis upgrade. If you’re using a router comparable to the DeWalt 611, it should work. You may need to source a different spindle mount as well. However, any components used outside of our stock configuration are unsupported. You may find additional support in the Community Forum here.

Wondering about future upgrades
Are there any upgrades that have solid rail systems with ball screws instead of belts? The bridge does flex if there’s alot of load being applied. Which would also cause the y rails to flex. Also I noticed that you are still using a brush motor in the new upgrade. Do you have any thing for brushless motors that wouldn’t stop running out of nowhere while running faster feedrates
Asked by andrew harlow on Jun 5, 2021
Hi Andrew. Thank you for your question. We do not have any upgrades to replace the belt and v-wheel system. The current upgrades are for stronger belts and increased z-axis work area. The spindle has not been upgraded, it is still the stock DeWalt 611 which is considered a consumable component as the brushes need to be replaced from time to time.

Acrylic stiffeners
From the pictures it seems that the acrylic panels are mounted on the inside of the Y axes rails. Can you explain how they are supposed function as stiffeners? How are acrylic panels strong enough to keep the axes rails from flexing when the spindle is cutting material?
Thanks.
Asked by Marco Quezada on Jun 9, 2021
Marco,
The acrylic stiffeners will mount to the inside of the Y rails. This adds rigidity to the Y-axis, which cuts down on movement when the gantry is moving along those Y rails.

Length of belting
Is there any way to get the belts longer than the 1000mm ones, I need them 1500mm
Asked by Daniel Jones on Jul 9, 2021
Daniel,
Thank your for inquiry.
When you receive the upgrade kit, you will get one long belt that is sized down to fit the 1000 mm machine, or smaller (for folks who have the older 500 and 750 machines). Since it comes in one length and is sized down by the end user, you can order replacement or additional belting and size it accordingly.
We currently only have the 6 mm belting available for individual purchase, we will have the 9 mm available on our site shortly.

This is the last part I need for my upgrade and I don’t want to tear my machine down 4 times to do all of the upgrades. If inventables is behind with orders, stop offering the upgrade until you are able to fulfill the order in a timely manner. Not a month later. Quick to take my money but slow to deliver. And not one email stating the ship date got pushed back.

The risers in the Upgrade Kit replace the stock X-Carve end plates. They have a slight ‘L’ shape to them that stays more in-line with the wasteboard and the slides. This allows for more space while not obstructing the wasteboard.

what is the maximum z height to carve on?
Asked by Jonathan Dixon on Aug 30, 2021
Hey Jonathan,
With the Z-Axis upgrade, the gantry clearance is increased to 4.5 inches. It is possible to carve on a 4-inch thick material, but it might be a tight fit when accommodating for the length of a bit. It is important to keep in mind that you can only cut as deep as the cutting length of the bit installed in your spindle.

Yes, this upgrade will work with smaller machines, including the 750mm. However, to get the most out of this upgrade, we highly recommend using the X-Controller Kit and the Wide Makerslide. While the new stepper motors can be run on the original g-shield controller, you will not be getting the full benefit from the upgraded motors.

Here are the specs of the machine after upgrading:
X-Axis 52.0"
Answered by Paul Stolz on Nov 3, 2021
Y-Axis 41.0"
Z-Axis 37.0"
Can you give us a comparison vs orginal belt/Motors on speeds and feeds on most common materials (Ply, MDF, Hardwoods, Acrylic)
Asked by Carlos Olvera on Nov 4, 2021
Hi Carlos,
Yes, the upgrades will give you a 3x chip removal rate on woods and plastics, effectively halving your carve time when using the new stock settings vs the old stock settings in Easel.

How many V wheels come with the upgrade package, or will I need to purchase more to replace all of them?
Asked by Ray Hensley on Nov 12, 2021

XCarve 500mm upgrading
I have 500mm Xcarve from when it first came out. What would I have to do to add this upgrade. Would I need a new controller and I assume I would have to cut down the parts to fit?
Asked by Mark Forry on Nov 25, 2021
Hi Mark,
To get the most out of this upgrade, we highly recommend using the X-Controller Kit and the Wide Makerslide. While the new stepper motors can be run on the original g-shield controller, you will not be getting the full benefit from the upgraded motors. You will also need updated X, Y1, Y2, and Z stepper motor cable assemblies. You can cut down your stiffeners to fit your machine size as well. Everything else should fit your machine as is.

Does the router need to be upgraded as well?
Also do you get more hours out of the Makita than the DeWalt before having to replace the brushes?
Hi Mark,
We do not have any further discounts on the upgrades at this time. You can purchase individual upgrades like the makita or the modular wasteboard here if you’d like:
https://www.inventables.com/categories/machine-upgrades/x-carve-upgrades
The Makita typically has a longer brush life than the DeWalt 611, especially when running the router at the recommended lowest speed.
Answered by Paul Stolz on Nov 30, 2021
HI Mark,
Answered by Robert Dillon on Dec 12, 2021
With regards to the router being “upgraded”, mine came with the Dewalt 611, and I have put at least 100 hours on the router with no issues so far. I did purchase a set of brushes from Amazon for $9.56.
I think, as with any type of router, the type of material you’re carving and how your speeds and feeds are running on the X-carve, and the router, determine how long your brushes will last.
Missing parts
I ordered this upgrade kit but the installation instructions reference parts that were not included. Specifically the M5 washers needed for replacing the idlers (part number 25287-13). Not sure how significant those are to the success of the upgrade. For anyone considering purchasing this upgrade, I would wait a while longer for issues like this to be worked out.

How do we keep the tee nuts in place to secure the stiffeners?
The tee nuts don’t stay in side the slot when being tightened, making it impossible to install the stiffeners.
I’ve left multiple emails and voicemail message asking for help during the last week, but haven’t received a response within the promised 24 hours or ever.
Can I suggest that you put something at the top of the upgrade instructions telling users not to begin installation because you may not be able to get your CNC operating again and there’ll be no tech support once your unit is in pieces.
Asked by Bob Krause on Dec 6, 2021
Hi Bob, thank you for reaching out and I apologize for the trouble. It looks like we responded to your email about this last Friday, you may want to check your spam folder.
Answered by Julie Bryant on Dec 7, 2021
To answer your question—
The tee nuts rotate as you tighten the screw. You insert them in horizontally, but as you tighten, they turn vertically until they are locked into place. You may need to rotate the screw counter clockwise before tightening, as this will help the tee nut into the proper position.

The X-Carve Upgrade Kit will work best with 1000mm X-Carves, but it will work with smaller X-Carves as well. If you wanted to install these components on a 750mm or 500mm X-Carve, you may have some spare parts left over – for example, acrylic stiffeners. Those with smaller X-Carves can follow this guide if you are interested in expanding your X-Carve to the 1000mm size.
Thank you!
zaxis
does it come with the z axis rail
Asked by Todd Doak on May 6, 2022
Hey Todd,
All of the major components of this upgrade are included in the product image and the technical data. There technically isn’t a rail associated with the Z-Axis, as this is the Direct Drive with the threaded rod that moves the spindle/router up and down, which is in fact included with this kit. The rail that this axis rides on from left to right would be the Wide MakerSlide (30678-03), which is actually the X-Axis. This is not included in this upgrade kit.
I hope this helps clarify. If you have any other questions about this, please feel free to reach out to our support directly.

Calculating steps/mm
I’m using my own controller. I have to change the GRBL settings. To calculate this i need various info about the pulleys for the X_Y axis along with information about the Z axis. Where can i find those?
Asked by Andreas Tsamis on May 26, 2022
What I had to do when I used my own controller was to cut down a metal yard stick so that it would fit flat on the wasteboard end to end. Put in a small 1/8 or 1/32 bit into the router, and position it just over the ruler on the metric scale. Starting with the X axis I would jog the machine 1mm, then change the GRBL settings until it moved exactly 1mm. Then move it 5mm, you may have to adjust the settings so that it goes exactly 5mm, then 10, 20, 50 and so on until it can move exactly the length of each axis and be accurate end to end. I would move it end to end both ways a few times to see if it stayed on, because If you’re off a (.1mm) little bit, going end to end a few times will expose that. Of course do something similar for the other axis. For the Z I put a tiny zip tie on my router bit and used the end hanging off to measure the z axis distance traveled.
This normally took me less than an hour, so it sounds like more work than it really is. I also used cncjs instead of easel that I ran off a Raspberry PI that connected to my USB port of the controller. This was far more accurate than any other method to get the machine dialed in. Once you get it in SAVE THE CONFIG, I believe Easel overwrote mine a few times.

Asked by JEFF williams on Aug 7, 2022
Will this work with my j tech 7 watt laser
was worried it need something else
Hi there, Jeff
Unfortunately, Inventables does not support the use of lasers on the X-Carve. It is our position that putting a laser on an open frame X-Carve is dangerous.
There are 4 risks we see with adding a laser:
1. Neither X-Carve nor Easel were designed for use with lasers.
2. If there is a malfunction with the direction the laser points it could cause damage or injury.
3. Operating a laser without proper ventilation could cause toxic fumes to enter the air and potentially be breathed in by the operator.
4. The laser could start a fire in the material or the wasteboard. Typically laser cutters have metal cases and air assist features to extinguish fires from lasers. X-Carve doesn’t have either. Our official recommendation is that customers should not make this modification to their machine.
Please feel free to reach out to us at help@inventables.com if you’d like additional information. Thank you!

I am still using my Dewalt, but will eventually need to replace this, will both Dewalt and Makita work with this upgrade?
Asked by Krystal Horn on Oct 19, 2022
Hi there, Krystal
Yes, the X-Carve upgrades will work with the DeWalt and Makita routers. That being said, you would need to get the Makita Spindle Mount if/when you switch over to the Makita router, as the mounts for the Makita and DeWalt routers have slightly different measurements. Until you switch over to the Makita, you can continue to use your DeWalt router and Mount.

Hi there, Frank
If you have Easel Pro, then you have the ability to utilize 3D Carving in Easel Pro – no other software is required! You may find that you might use an external software option or online repository to source your 3D models, but once you have an STL model, you do not need any other software beside Easel Pro.

Will the upgrade help to prevent the machine from getting off the cut path of the software?
Asked by Diane Ivy on Nov 28, 2022
Hi Diane, offset carving could be due to a variety of reasons. If the issue is mechanical, then the upgrades do make the machine sturdier, which could prevent issues like this from happening. There could also be interference or controller related issues that prevent the machine from cutting on the path. If you have any issues, please contact CS for further troubleshooting.

Will your upgrades work with Newbe upgrades I already have such as the z upgrade?
Asked by frank barker on Nov 28, 2022
Hey Frank,
The CNC4Newbie upgrades are technically 3rd-party modifications, as they are not our products. Unfortunately, we have not tested their upgrades or components, so we are not able to verify if they are compatible. With that said, our upgrades were not designed around 3rd-party components, so it is not likely that they are compatible without further modification.
You may be able to find more information from other members in the community forum who may have tested this.

Asked by Klay C Jones on Dec 31, 2022
Hi, Klay,
Thank you reaching out. While this is certainly a mater of preference, the Makita’s do have longer-lasting brushes, but they can also be run at lower RPM’s, which can make for cleaner cuts. With that said, the Makita does require a different mount and different collets, which can be found here:

Is this for the 1000mm xcarve? And I’m assuming the upgraded z axis won’t support my original suck it dust boot?
Asked by Roger Clendenning on Mar 24, 2023
Hi, Roger,
Thank you for reaching out with your question. This upgrade kit is compatible with a 1000mm X-Carve. However, if you have a smaller model (such as a 500mm or 750mm), to get the most out of this upgrade, we highly recommend using the X-Controller Kit and the Wide Makerslide. While the new stepper motors can be run on the original g-shield controller, you will not be getting the full benefit from the upgraded motors. You will also need updated X, Y1, Y2, and Z stepper motor cable assemblies. You can cut down your stiffeners to fit your machine size as well. Everything else should fit as is.
Regarding the dust boot, unfortunately, we have not tested that component, so we are not able to verify if is would be compatible. With that said, our upgrades were not designed around 3rd-party components, so it is not likely that they are compatible.
I hope this information helps. If you have any other questions or would like further clarification, please feel free to reach out to our support team via phone or email.

How can I tell if my x-carve was made before 2016?
Asked by James tingley on May 25, 2023
Hey James,
Great question! 2015 model X-Carves (Pre-2016) had NEMA 23 motors that were directly wired, rather than having cables separate from the motors with white connectors on them. If you have these older motors that already have cables attached, you likely have a 2015 model X-Carve, and you will need to purchase the cable assemblies mentioned in the note to be able to use these new, upgraded motors.
2015 Model X-Carves also did not include the X-Controller Kit.
More information about older models and identifying the differences can be found in the following article: Update/Upgrade Older X-Carve Models
