Four key components for updating your original model X-Carve to the one launched in Sept '16.
If I have a 500mm X-Carve, can I buy the 1000mm Upgrade Kit and get both a bigger and updated machine?
Asked by Ken Witt on Aug 31, 2016
The description above indicates that you would need additional parts.
Just off the top of my head, the waste board, belts, wires, and drag chain would be different between the models. You would also likely need more T-slot nuts and screws.
Answered by Patrick Weigle on Aug 31, 2016
Patrick is correct. We unfortunately do not have those kits available for individual sale, so you’d have to source those components through their individual product pages.

What is the upgrade path from the Shapeoko 2 to the new X Carve?
Asked by PR Smith on Aug 31, 2016
Unfortunately, the new X-Carve is not directly compatible with the Shapeoko 2. You would need to first purchase the Shapeoko 2 Upgrade Kit (which we still have a few of through the old configurator page) in order to upgrade your Z-axis, X-Carriage, and belts, and then get this upgrade kit here for the Wide Makerslide, X-controller, Z-probe and side board.
Answered by Paul Stolz on Aug 31, 2016
The video mentioned ridigity improvements. Is there an upgrade path for that?
Asked by Justin C on Aug 31, 2016
The main rigidity fix is the wide makerslide, which can be purchased here:
https://www.inventables.com/technologies/wide-makerslide
If you are having any issues with the eccentric nuts coming lose and affecting your rigidity, we also offer eccentric spacers and nylock nuts that you can use instead. You would of course have to buy longer screws as well.
Answered by Paul Stolz on Aug 31, 2016
does the upgrade kit include the eccentric spacers?
Answered by The Guru on Sep 10, 2016
It does not, but here is what you’d need:
Eccentric Spacer 0.375" Long 25195-08 – 2 pcs
Answered by Paul Stolz on Sep 12, 2016
Eccentric Spacer 0.200" Long 25195-07 – 8 pcs
Button Head Cap Screw M5 x 40 25286-51 – 2 screws
Button Head Cap Screw M5 x 30 25286-05 – 8 screws
Hex Nut M5 Nylon Locking 30265-01 – 10 pcs (1 10 pack)
I’d love to be able to buy a rigidity set too, instead of piecing all of these little things for my upgrades.

The x-controller has new connectors that the original X-Carve did not, will the upgrade kit include the required connectors?
Asked by Justin C on Aug 31, 2016
Hi Justin,
The X-controller terminals are the same. The new wiring kits have ferrule connectors that make it slightly easier to plug the wires into the terminals on the X-Controller. Those ferrules can be purcahsed individually here if you are interested – https://www.inventables.com/technologies/insulated-ferrule-kit

For shipping internationally, can you omit the MDF sideboard?
To reduce the cost of international shipping, can you omit the MDF from the upgrade kit? Thanks.
Asked by Chris Byrne on Aug 31, 2016
Hi Chris,
While we can’t separate the individual components in this particular kit, you can purchase the individual items from the kit (and simply omit the sideboard from your cart) by clicking on the links in the product details above.
Answered by Paul Stolz on Aug 31, 2016
What a shame. That adds $50 to the shipping costs. I was hoping to simply eliminate the weight of a $3 piece of MDF costing a lot to ship to UK. Oh well.

I have a 1000mm X-carve with X-controller that I am assembling now. What all can be ordered to upgrade it?
it appears from the video that there are some additional parts that are changing that are not listed here. Can you provide a kit or a list of parts that can be ordered to change out to the newest version?
Asked by Craig Stueve on Aug 31, 2016
Unfortunately, some of the components that are in the new X-Carve are not available for individual sale. These components are mainly used to make assembly faster. The components in this Upgrade Kit are the ones that are used to improve performance.
Answered by Paul Stolz on Aug 31, 2016
Will the upgrade be available without the sideboard entirely?
The sideboard is unnecessary for me. Unless there’s a reason for the electronics being level with the wasteboard and in the sideline of fire of flying chips, I’m not seeing the benefit. For me, I would need to discard the sideboard entirely. I would locate the electronics under the machine or at least a couple feet away.
As a suggestion how about a foot button for E-Stop? Or maybe a port to plug in a secondary foot E-Stop cable farther from the machine. You may not want to be physically near the machine or reaching over the machine if something is going so wrong you have to E-Stop. Asked by Jonas Rullo on Aug 31, 2016
Hi Jonas,
You can purchase the other three components through their individual product pages listed in the product details above, so that you don’t have to purchase the sideboard.
In terms of an E-stop extension, I’ll pass your feedback along to our engineering team for future consideration. In the meantime, you could theoretically extend the wiring on your E-stop and separate it from the X-Controller, although that is currently an unsupported modification and we wouldn’t be able to support that.
Answered by Paul Stolz on Aug 31, 2016
I am upgrading my original machine with the new X-Controller. Perhaps like others, I added an E-Stop when doing the original wiring to the front of the machine. I also want to mount the X-Controller to the bottom and “upside” down. My E-Stop “chops” power to the power supply so I can continue to use MY E-Stop, wiring THEIR E-Stop per the kit instructions. Also, there are 3 pushbutton switches on the X-Controller that would be hard to access with my mounting configuration. I think they can be “pulled-out” and located elsewhere. There would be a concern about “noise”, but I verified with Inventables that there is “debouncing” in their software, so external mounting should not be a problem. I don’t know yet how to use these switches. I did order the complete kit since it looked like it was cheaper than ordering all separate parts. I didn’t know at that time whether or not I could mount underneath so I just ordered. MY major concern at this time is whether or not I can get 24 VDC from the X-Controller for use in my external control panel. I know I can always “hot wire” it, but it would be nice if it was brought out via a separate pin. The bottom line is that the E-Stop and other 3 switches “constrain” where and how you mount the X-Controller. For some new and old users, letting users bring out these signals would be helpful. But, there is only so much you can do. On balance, the X Controller is a significant improvement over the previous wiring.

500mm Shapeoko to X-Carve to X-Carve 2.0
I have a 500mm SO2 that’s been upgraded to an x-carve minus the new x-controller. I’ve been pondering going to 1000mm and I’m tantalized by
“NOTE: A 500mm machine cannot be upgraded to a 1000mm machine without additional parts.”
So, please, please, please give me a one click upgrade path. Or at least a “fill my cart with everything it takes” button.
If none of that please just tell me what “additional parts” are needed.
Please, please, please :-)

Can the Wide Makerslide be used for the Shapeoko 2 End plate (or Prev Xcarve)?
I have a 1m x 1m Shapeoko 2 and it’s Y-Axis plates (also previous X-Carve) have only 1 × 2 Hole configuration.
The Wide makerslides need 2 × 2 hole configuration. Wouldn’t i need a new Y axis plate? It doesnt seem to be included in this kit.
Or this Wide MakerSlide is only for the X-Axis?

Parts included in this kit
I am interested in upgrading my pre-2015 Shapeoko 2 to a 1000×1000 machine. I understand that the first step is the Shapeoko 2 upgrade kit, then this kit to get to the size I want.
My question is two fold. First, what parts are duplicating functions that are already provided by my older machine (i.e. the X-controller and sideboard [since the electronics are already mounted under the machine]),
and second, are there 3 pieces of 1000mm wide makerslide included in the kit?Essentially, it appears that once I have the Shapeoko 2 upgrade kit, the only additional items I would require from this kit to get a 1000×1000 machine would be the longer motor cables and the longer slides (for a total cost of ~$165 for 3 1000mm makerslides and 15’ of cable). Is this assessment correct, or am I missing something?

24VDC spindle wiring
I am almost finished installing all of the components of the upgrade kit but I’m not sure how I’m supposed to wire my 24VDC spindle to the XController. It says it doesn’t power the spindle now. Do I need the old power supply and some kind of relay now?
Asked by Mark Maness on Jan 16, 2017
Hi Mark, you should use your old power supply to run the 24V DC spindle. You can leave everything connected except for the speed control wires which should now go from the PSU to the ‘Spindle PWM’ and the adjacent ‘GND’ ports on the X-Controller. No power should be supplied from the X-Controller itself. Please let us know if you have any other questions. Best, -Griffin.

Upgrading a Shapeoko 2
I have a Shapeoko 2 and I have purchased both the Shapeoko 2 and X Carve upgrade kits. I have three questions:
1. I would like to also upgrade either the X or Y axis to 750mm. Which axis would be the better to upgrade? What additional parts would I need to do this?
2. Would it be worth upgrading the motors during the move to X Carve?
3. Would it be better to do each upgrade in turn or simply dismantle the Shapeoko and build the unit from scratch? Thanks in advance for your help.
Asked by Colin White on Jan 23, 2017
Hi Colin, thanks for contacting us. It is possible to upgrade one axis or both to 750mm if you wish, though in addition to the 750mm makerslide rails you’ll need more wire, drag chain lengths (if you have a drag chain) as well as 20×20mm extrusions for the bottom frame of the machine. Generally we advise upgrading the Y axis as it will have slightly less flex than the gantry, though if you want a wider X axis instead, there’s no problem upgrading with the new single piece wide makerslide. You would also have to make a new wasteboard to cover the whole cutting area of the machine. Upgrading the motors to NEMA 23 is a good idea since you’ll want to take advantage of the extra power you’ll get with the X-Controller. I happen to think that just doing the upgrades will probably be fine, though given that you’re changing the size you’ll probably have to do at least a partial disassembly of the whole machine. I would keep subassemblies together, but disassemble the frame. Please let us know if you have any other questions. Best, -Griffin.

Hi Ken, if you’re using the z-probe with Easel, Easel itself has a canned cycle that it runs. If you’re sending probing code manually, you’ll want to use the following rubric:
`G20 [switches to inch mode, can use G21 if you’ll be working in mm]
G91 [switches to relative mode]
G38.2 Z-1.000 F2.500 [core of the probe cycle, moves the Z axis down 1" at a rate of 2.5IPM until the probe makes contact]
G10 L20 P0 Z0.200 [sets the z axis work coordinate to the thickness of the puck]
G91 G20 G0 Z0.500 [retracts the bit by 0.5"]`You can, of course, vary these parameters both in Easel and when sending the code by hand. Please let us know if you have any other questions. Best, -Griffin.

Hello Francisco,
Unfortunately, we do not have a kit available to get a Shapeoko 2 up to an 1000mm X-Carve. You would first need to purchase the Shapeoko 2 Upgrade kit to get the machine to a 2015 model X-Carve and then you would have to purchase many individual components to upgrade the size of the machine. I have emailed you a list of items you will need to purchase in order to expand the size of the machine.

I have only been using the X-carve for about a week and the Dust boot ended up coming loose and slide down in turn got caught and popped loose causing it get eaten up by the router. I have tightened the hand screws holding it on several times over, but it doesnt seem to stay tight. Resulting in this happening. Any place that I can order the lower plexiglass section with the brush attached? The upright plexi pieces are fine minus not staying tight

Answered by ItzMe Again on Jul 13, 2017
I don’t like Matt’s tone or agree with his comparison of price since the x-carve is a piece of technology. As with any other technology, the new version is often better and cheaper. However, I do agree with the basic idea of what he is asking. As a loyal customer that pre-ordered his x-carve back in April 2015, you begin to feel like a part of something bigger as you work through issues with the product along side Inventables and the community. It is completely possible that Inventables just can’t afford to offer the discount as they feed money back into the business to improve the product and expand the offerings. But, if possible, I would have liked to see a discount on the upgrade kit for those loyal customers that have been with you since the beginning.
Answered by Chad Forrester on Jul 14, 2017
Hi all, thank you for your feedback on this matter. We designed this upgrade kit as a convenient way for existing customers to get a discount on machine upgrades given that you save about $67-$77 (depending on the size) on this kit vs purchasing the kits individually. Please let us know if you have any additional questions. Thanks, -Griffin.

where can I get a collet to fit some .256 tapered bits
Asked by Larry Wright on May 30, 2017
Hi Larry, I’m unsure if there is a collet available for any of our spindles that will fit that particular size- is this a nominal 6.5mm size? In some cases you may be able to fit such a bit into a nominally 1/4" collet, however 0.006" would probably be too big of a difference.

Alternative use
I’m a test engineer tasked with creating an economical test solution for measuring the electrical characteristics of sonar elements (piezo ceramics). As such I have an idea to use an X-Carve for something entirely different than what it was intended for. I want to move a set of test probes (similar to voltmeter leads), over a circuit board and lower them at various points. In place of the router would be a custom designed holder for the electronic test probes. The intent being that the Z-axis would lower the probes of an RLC meter or and Impedance Analyzer down to components (such as capacitors or pins connected to small nickel sized ceramic disks), on the circuit board and make capacitance and impedance measurements. The accuracy appears to be adequate however I don’t know if the repeatability will allow the X-Carve to traverse 120 positions and continue to hit within 0.072mm and 0.13mm of the intended target. I do have the option of recalibrating but not until the test run of 120 elements is complete (about 60 seconds for each of the 120 test locations). I also need to know if the Z-axis downward force can be controlled or its motor current “sensed” to prevent it from crushing an expensive ceramic should something go wrong.
Asked by Charles F. Englehart on Jun 8, 2017
Hi Charles, I would say that this is possible, however it will probably require more time invested in hacking software than hardware. There’s a pick and place machine that some people have put together with a makerslide frame: https://www.liteplacer.com/ This is probably closer to what you’re looking for and may offer better resources. In terms of creating an interactive closed-loop system that actively senses probe status and other factors, you may have to do some work with the controller firmware as well as the PC-side interface. g-code may not be the most optimal command format for this application, though it could prove usable. Best, -Griffin.

I have a 750mm x-carve and want to upgrade to a 1000mm
Asked by Timothy Byrne on Jul 9, 2017
Hi Timothy, going from a 750mm machine to 1000mm machine is a fairly extensive upgrade path since you’ll need to purchase new rails, belting, wiring, waste board, side board (if applicable), and drag chains. The plates, carriages, wheels, spindle, and controller are about the only things that can be carried over. You’ll also need to contact us to get some of the kit components (like the drag chains) added to your order manually since they aren’t inventory items. Please let us know if you have any other questions. Best, -Griffin.

Is there any plans to make the Z-probe into a 3 Axis probe?
I am looking at the competitions 3 axis and I feel that Inventables should really bring the whole enchilada to the table. The dust system is nice, but I think that Rail protectors and 3 axis zeroing should be made into a kit.
Asked by matt pearson on Jul 14, 2017
Hi Matt, thanks for contacting us. At the moment we’ve stuck with a Z axis probe for the sake of simplicity, however there are aftermarket options (like the Triquerta) that will do 3 axis zeroing. X-Carve 300W 24VDC Spindle Kit Compatibility
Is this X-Carve Upgrade Kit compatible with the original X-Carve 300W 24VDC Spindle Kit purchased in July 2015? Are there any articles showing the difference between my current spindle and the new DeWalt 611 Spindle (perhaps showing why the DeWalt 611 is the better choice now?)
Asked by Daniel Crawford on Nov 6, 2017
Hi Daniel, thanks for contacting us. This kit will be perfectly compatible with a machine with the old 24V spindle. The biggest compatibility issue would be with the dust shoe kit which is designed for the 611 setup. Other than that most all of the upgrades will work without issue. As far as the difference between the 24V spindle and the DeWalt, the DeWalt is considerable more powerful than the 24V spindle. We also had some production issues with the 24v spindle that led us to discontinue it in favor of the DeWalt. You will need to keep your old 24V PSU for the spindle as well since the X-Controller can’t supply power to a spindle. Please let us know if you have any other questions. Best, -Griffin.

Asked by Alfred To on Mar 4, 2018
Hi Alfred, thanks for contacting us. There are a few ways of going about this. Stepper motor cable.
What is the advantage in installing the stepper motor cable for the X-Controller’s extra stepper driver?
Asked by Steven Wollman on Dec 24, 2018
Hi James, the advantage is that you’re simply able to provide more power to your stepper motors when wiring them separately. You are sharing one stepper driver between two motors when wired together. The stepper drivers on the x-controller are capable of 4A per winding, so you’re still getting more power to your stepper motors when wired together compared to the Arduino/gShield controller, hence the option in the instructions not to wire an additional length of stepper motor cable though I would recommend you take the time to wire the two motors separately.

If you are looking to update your machine to be close to the current 1000mm X-Carve, it is very likely more cost-effective and efficient to buy a new machine, as you are essentially building an entirely new machine anyway.
To answer your question, this kit is specifically for updating the 2015 model X-Carves (which can essentially be seen as the next generation after the Shapeoko 2) to the 2016 model X-Carves. There are other parts that would be necessary to convert your Shapeoko 2 to an X-Carve that are not present in this bundle.
You can find this article about updating a Shapeoko 2 to a 2015 model X-Carve: Upgrading a ShapeOko 2 to an X-Carve (2015 Model).
Even with earlier models of the X-Carve, many of the components are no longer available directly, as they have been updated and changed over the years. You can find more details about that here: Update/Upgrade Older X-Carve Models.
I apologize for not being able to help directly, but I hope this helps provide some clarification! If you have more questions about this, I would recommend reaching out to our support directly.
