Shapeoko2 Compatibility?
Does this work with a Shapeoko2?
Asked by Andrew Forsberg on Nov 8, 2015
Hi Andrew, unfortunately for this to work with the Shapeoko2 you would also need to upgrade your z-axis with this motor plate. Check out the Z-Axis, Drive Rod, and Z-Axis Motor sections of the X-Carve instructions for assembly information.

Asked by Stephan K on Nov 10, 2015
Hi Stephan, thanks for you question. The $ value depends on which version of grbl you have, however the z steps/mm for the ACME rod should be 188.976 steps/mm. You can find more information on configuring your grbl settings here.

Stepper Settings for the Z Axis
I am using the Xcarve (ShapeOko2 upgrade with a TinyG. The x and Y motors are set with 200 Steps per rotation and 8 microsteps. Since the motor for the Z is the same wouldn’t those setting be the same. Also I calculated the travel with the ACME Lead Screw to be 2.11mm per rotation (Based off 1inch per 12 rotations) because the TinyG is asking for travel per rotation. Can you confirm my settings. All seems to be fine but wanted to be sure.
Asked by Michael Omiccioli on Feb 16, 2016
Hi Michael, the standard setup with an X-Carve is 8x microstepping for X and Y at 40 steps/mm, though for the Z axis, we use 2x microstepping with 188.947 steps/mm 2.1167mm/rev is correct. Please let us know if you have any further questions. Best, -Griffin.

@Griffin I’m using M8 threaded rod(shapeOko2 upgrade with a TinyG), what will be the travel per rev in this setup?
Answered by Changyoul Han on Aug 5, 2016
Hello, the setting for the M8 rod should be at 1.25mm/rev. This gives 320 steps/mm if you have 2x microstepping. Best, -Griffin.

SO2 Acme on X-Carve
I have the SO2 acme lead screw, w/o the M6 threading on the end. Is this still usable w/ the X-Carve Z-Axis configuration? Will a shaft collar work in place of the M6 locknut?
Asked by James Finley on Jul 8, 2016
Hi James, generally with the X-carve Z axis configuration we recommend using this kit since it is generally more secure with a nylock nut holding it down, but as long as the shaft is 8mm wide you may be able to use a shaft collar temporarily. Please let us know if you have any other questions. Best, -Griffin.

ACME lead screw wobbles.
It behaves like it’s bent? Could the bearing be crooked? The nut isn’t cross threaded. Are there other reasons for this.
Asked by Kurtis Saiyo on Jul 18, 2016
Machine: X-carve.
Hi Kurtis, Unfortunately some ACME rods that were sent out from older batches were out of spec and could be bent. We have since switched to a domestic supplier to remedy this. If it seems like this is the case, please get in touch with us through our support center or over email and we can help you get a replacement. Thanks, -Griffin.

Hello, If you’re using this particular lead screw which has a pitch of 12 Thread/inch, you’ll need a 188.976 steps/mm setting for the Z axis. for an M8x1.25mm leadscrew, you’ll need a setting of 320 steps/mm. You should also check you make sure that your stepper jumper for the Z axis is set properly to 2x micro-stepping. If it’s not there you may be getting 8x micro-stepping. Please let us know if you have any other questions. Best, -Griffin.

It’s not really a complete kit without the Washer M8!
Answered by crispin on Feb 3, 2017
Hi crispin, thanks for pointing this out. The original X-Carve did not include the M8 washers, and it was only once we introduced the new stepper motors with pulleys attached in the current X-Carve was that washer necessary. The washer makes sure that the two pulleys on the Z Axis are in alignment. I will pass this along to our product team to see if we can get this washer included in the future or at least make it more clear that this was the 2015 version of the kit. Thanks again!

There are questions regarding to lubricant for this. Can you make a recommendation?
What is the recommended lube to use on the two? Also how much and cleaning procedure.
Asked by Stephen Cook on Dec 11, 2016
Hi Stephen, I believe we include a small packet of silicone/PTFE grease with our machines, similar to this: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Super-Lube-3-oz-Tube-Synthetic-Grease-with-Syncolon-PTFE-21030/202932687?cm_mmc=Shopping%7cTHD%7cG%7c0%7cG-BASE-PLA-D25T-Garage-Automotive%7c&gclid=CPa29Pvq8dACFcW4wAodQbYOvg&gclsrc=aw.ds though a light silicone/petroleum based lubricant like TriFlow will work as well. Generally you should aim to use as little as possible to make it work, that way the leadscrew doesn’t collect as much dust during cutting. Usually a soft lint-free cloth will be fine for cleaning off excess grease and accumulated gunk, though for caked on varnish, gunk, etc. you can use mineral spirits to clean the assembly, though you’ll have to re-apply lubricant afterwards. Please let us know if you have any other questions. Best, -Griffin.
Answered by Griffin Dennis on Dec 13, 2016
Camellia oil! Don’t let any silly cones get on your project. You can not paint or stain anything stained with Silicone Lubricants. It will show up as fish-eyes in the finish or worse.

10 inch ACME z-axis lead-screw
We need this available in 10 inch (250 mm) length for those who like both top and bottom bearings on the Z axis. Maybe a range of lengths could be offered, even 20 inch (500 mm) for those who prefer direct drive (in place of belt drive) on the X and Y axes?
Asked by David Miller on Jan 18, 2017
Hi David, thank you for your suggestion. Unfortunately we currently have no plans of offering this rod in longer lengths as there is no official upgrade path to a leadscrew-based machine. The best option would be to find a dedicated kit from a third party, or a supplier like McMaster: https://www.mcmaster.com/#precision-acme-lead-screws/=15yx8jw Please let us know if you have any other questions. Best, -Griffin.
Answered by Griffin Dennis on Jan 18, 2017
Your best bet is McMaster Carr or Grainger. However, this being said Inventables makes a great machine. I shoved a 4’-9" steel tube down the throat of the 40mm square extrusion to get the rigidity I wanted, But I had to use the services of two local machine shops to do it without distortion to the extrusion. Your imagination is the best weapon. We can not expect inventables to manufacture everything we dream up. The best thing is a grainger catalog and a Machinery’s Handbook.

Acme nut
Do you sell just the plastic nut for the z axis? I do not need the whole kit just the nut? Or any recommendations on just a replacement? Otherwise it I will just have to upgrade to the cnc4newbie upgrade so I do not have to worry about it anymore
Asked by Tara bishop on Jul 20, 2018
Hi Tara, unfortunately we no longer offer the leadscrew nut by itself. If you need a replacement you can contact us through our support center and we may be able to get you one if yours has broken. Otherwise you would have to order the whole kit. Please keep us posted. Best, -Griffin.
Answered by Griffin Dennis on Jul 23, 2018
Well that’s unfortunate. I guess I will be upgrading to the cnc4newbies z axis and would recommend anyone buying an xcarve DO NOT get the cheap z axis from them. Just go ahead and get the cnc4newbies direct drive z axis and save yourself the trouble of broken belts plastic nuts that wear out and can not be replaced separately.

Can i get a new bearing for the top?
My z kicks up and down about 1/16 of an inch i can see the inner part of the bearing moving.
Asked by HM Print & Design Wayne Hesler-Mondore on Mar 19, 2019
Hi Wayne, thanks for your message. If you believe you have a defective component, please email us directly at help@inventables.com with some documentation of the problem and we can get you a replacement. That said, it may be that your lead screw simply wasn’t positioned correctly during the assembly. If you press up from the bottom of the lead screw and you see the movement, loosen the pulley set screws to free the pulley from the lead screw, press up again from the bottom of the lead screw to pick up that slack, then re-tighten the set screws. You’ll then need to secure the assembly in place by tightening down the nut on top. Please refer to the lead screw section of the instructions for more information.

Is there a kit or parts list for the acme rod upgrade for shapeoko 2? Asked by Brian Kerbacher on Dec 16, 2020
Hi Brian,
We don’t have all of the parts listed on the Shapeoko wiki for a straight upgrade:
https://wiki.shapeoko.com/index.php/Zaxis_ACME#ACME_Lead_Screw_Assembly_Instructions
You would first need to upgrade the Z-axis to a belt drive as shown in our support article here:

Thanks Paul. Is there a guide on how to remove the thrust bearing from SO2 plate to be reused on belt drive plate?
Answered by Brian Kerbacher on Apr 25, 2021
Hi Brian, unfortunately we don’t have an official guide, however you can find a nice diagram of the SO2 z-axis assembly here from the instructions that should help. The flanged bearing is essentially sandwiched between two plates, but to get to that component you have to remove both the three brass standoff spacers attached to the stepper motor and the two M5x20mm button head cap screws that secure everything to your z-axis Makerslide. The nut on top of the flanged bearing would also have to be removed. If you’re still having trouble, please feel free to email us at help @ inventables . com with a few images and we can better assist you.
