Preparation

Please read the instructions and familiarize yourself with the attached files and the 2 Easel files and also the referenced Spring Joint Box link below:

This box is designed with a .125" bit in mind and a sheet of quarter inch MDF measuring 24" by 24" by .238" thick. Take some time to clamp this sheet down tightly and square to the X/Y axis.

Cut the slots

Click the “Open in Easel” button above to open the first file for cutting. Step through the process of carving the material.

Cut out the pieces

Open the following link to the cut through file in Easel and step through the process of carving the material.

Assembly

Why are the cut out parts in a different file from the slots?

Ah, because I wanted to control the order that they were cut in. They also overlap in some places and it worked best when doing them separately.

What type of wood did you use for the project the web links go to? I like the wood over the MDF cause I can stain the box after its all done

Hi Jeffrey, I just cut mine with MDF. I would probably cut it out of a good plywood the next time. I'm not sure that Randy used in the links but maybe it is maple?

Cut this last night. I like the design! I agree mdf may not be the best material, it might come together nice after I glue everything. I used 1/4" mdf and should have used a 1/4" bit or modified the design so it slides together better. Thanks for the project!

I would like to make one for my X Carver but I have the middle carver. And the 24 x 24 MDF Board is to big. How can I do it in sections

Hi Ralph, when you press the blue "Open in Easel" button above, you should see all of the pieces... once you have them in Easel, you can just carve individual pieces by moving the piece you want to carve into the cutting area and the rest set to 0 depth of cut. Hope that helps.
